James Begg (1808-83) was one of the conservative leaders in the Free Church of Scotland in the late nineteenth century. A man with a braod vision for the Christian Church in Scotland, he was deeply involved in the efforts to uphold Biblical principles in the face of the strongly running tide of liberalism.This book looks at three aspects of his life: the part that he played in the Voluntary Controversary in the 1860's and 70's; his work in helping the poor in Scottish cities; and his opposition to Roman Catholicism. Though written from an academic standpoint, its warm approach will make this book invaluable to Christians in the 21st century who find themselves in similar circumstances to Dr. Begg.
